Chain link fence gates and ornamental iron gates whether sliding or swinging type, attention is needed on the actual gate itself. Especially if there is an automatic operator attached to the gate itself. The fence / gate hardware is to blame for most automatic gate opener malfunctions and premature replacement of the electric operator due to being over-worked.
Sliding gates roll back and forth using either cantilever-type rollers, V-groove wheels, or hang by an aluminum track and use a truck assembly type roller system. All of these rollers / wheels never get the proper attention they need until the electric operator fails.
By failing to maintain the actual gate itself, permanent damage to the electric operator is inevitable. Not to mention constant trouble with the electric operators not working properly while trying to open and close.
After multiple times of opening and closing a day the rollers /wheels become out of alignment and / or start sagging causing the gate to not roll freely eventually causing bearing failure and the whole roller falling apart. Some rollers end up buried in dirt and mulch and need cleaning out and greasing to keep the gate rolling smoothly.
Prolonged periods of gates bouncing and jerking will cause failure of gate frame and welds which will result in more costly repairs.
Below are more examples of gates that failed to be maintained properly.
Just because it opened and closed does not mean it isn't needing attention. If your gate is being controlled by an automatic electric opener it is recommended by most manufacturers to perform preventative maintenance, inspect and adjust the rollers / hinges on the gate every 6 months.
There have even been multiple cases of chain link and ornamental iron gates falling over causing serious injury and even death due to improper gate hardware maintenance.
